Google promises to deliver real-time voice translation system in a few years time
World’s top search engine giant Google is developing a live, speech-based real-time voice translation system under the supervision of head of translation services, Franz Och. According to him, the translation system is capable of interpreting multi-lingual phone conversations in real-time and will reach to the end users soon in the near future. They are working to produce a combination of high-accuracy machine translation and high-accuracy voice recognition to let it work smoother. The feature combines voice recognition, speech-to-text voice synthesis which were available separately as of now.
The system is also eyeing to improve the recognition properties that are based on the repeated implementation by an individual user and Google is collecting the data across all users. ‘Everyone has a different voice, accent and pitch,’ said Mr Och. ‘But recognition should be effective with mobile phones because by nature they are personal to you.’
As it is known to everyone, Google has created an automatic system for translating text on computers, which is being honed by scanning millions of multi-lingual websites and documents. Google admits that speech recognition will be a tougher challenge than text but believes that a customer’s phone would adapt to its user by identifying their style of talking.
