The Symbian running on most of the smartphones in the world even though it never came at top in US sales list.

“You will see Symbian based devices from US based carriers coming in 2010.” said Larry Berkin, Symbian head of global alliances. The open source code provides facility of changing, using or any any individual or organization can take it and modify the code according to their wish.Berkin added that “you should see a lot of activity there certainly this year but the bulk of it is going to happen over the next 12, 24, 36 months.” Lee Willians, the Symbian Foundation’s executive director stated that “the dominating operating system provider out there is Symbian and now we are offering developers the ability to do so much more.”

Already it is competing with Apple’s iPhone OS and Google’s Android OS. However we have to see whether Symbian will become top or it won’t affect sales. Anyway the open sourcing of Symbian welcomed by free software advocates according to the press release issued by the Symbian.
