Google sold only 20000 Nexus One handsets in its opening week

Search engine giant Google launched its Android based Smartphone Google Nexus One on January 5, 2010 which is so called as ‘Superphone’ has fallen short on sales expectations and failed to attract the end users, as it sold only 20,000 handsets in its opening week, according to a new report from mobile analytics company Flurry.
When the sales of the Nexus One are compared with that of its rivals Motorola Droid and Apple iPhone 3GS handsets, Google is no way near to the sales registered by these biggies in their opening week. Droid has sold over 250,000 handsets which is 12 times bigger than Nexus One, while the myTouch 3G sold out 60,000 units and the iPhone 3GS sold 1.6 million units in its opening week which is 80 times to the Google Superphone.
Though the Flurry’s numbers are just estimates, who work with 10,000 developers building apps and tracks applications on 80% of the Android and iPhone handsets. When a new handset comes to market, Flurry notes how many apps are being downloaded to the new handset, and then estimates from there. Whatever the estimates may be, but these would definitely drop the sales further and affect the morale of the mobile users.
Google’s online “soft launch” of the Nexus One, a different strategic approach did not work out well on which they spent over $100 million on marketing which include exaggerating TV advertising spends. Adding to the above, Google might released the device at wrong time after the holiday season which adversely affected their sales.
Google’s objective with the Nexus One is a long term plan, so weak early sales aren’t the end of the world. It wants to disrupt the carrier model by selling direct to consumers through its own web site. It may take bit more time for consumers to get used to. Let’s wait and see.
