ABI Research: Mobile Device Sales to nearly Double by 2014
ABI Research came out with a report stating that the shipment of mobile devices will nearly double by 2014. According to the latest data, more 2.25 billion devices will be added to the existing mobile devices, whereas 1.2 billion devices shipped in 2009. The category of the mobile devices includes netbooks, mobile phones, MIDs, cellular modems and all the other consumer electronic goods.
“The next five years will see a shift in the breakdown between types of mobile devices shipped,” comments industry analyst Michael Morgan. According to Morgan, “The convergence period for cellular communications is coming to an end, and now we’re entering a period of divergence. For many devices the technology is already in place, it’s just the business and billing models that need to be built.”
We have seen a declination in handset shipments between 2008 and 2009 because of global recession, while the wireless handsets and cellular modems registered a good growth.
Sales of mobile devices are growing at just 4%, while cellular modem shipments are expected to grow by 40% annually and ultra mobile devices by 67% during the next 5 years. So, the operators will have a wide range of opportunities to cash up the market.
