idc logo IDC says: PC Market Returns to GrowthIf you ask the effect of poor economy and its impact on sales to PC makers, they would be the first to explain you how worst the last year was and the losses they have gone under. It’s not only the poor economy; they are also hit by the sales of netbooks which have dominated the Desktop market. The PC market rise 2.3 percent in the Q3 of 2009 and sees a positive growth in the market after a big flop for three consecutive quarters, according to research firm IDC’s Worldwide Quarterly PC Tracker, headquartered in Framingham.

The demand for portable computers like laptops and netbooks is increasing and seen a rapid growth of 28% when compared to 14% a year ago, as more consumers are preferring light-weight devices rather than desktops. “Worldwide portable PC shipments will almost double to 312.5 million units in 2013 from 165.2 million units in 2009, while the PC market is expected to see double-digit growth through 2013, with desktop shipments roughly flat growing to 131.9 million units in 2013 from 126.2 million units in 2009 and portable computers driving overall increases in shipments”, IDC said in a press release.

“As commercial spending recovers in 2010, we expect to see robust growth over the next several years,” said Loren Loverde, program director at IDC Worldwide Trackers, in a statement. “An aging installed base of PCs to replace, along with government aid and declining average selling prices are key ingredients for a recipe for resurgence of PC shipments into the commercial market segment,” said Richard Shim, research manager for PCs at IDC, in a statement.

PC vendors are looking forward to set themselves for gains as the market records a positive growth. Portable computers for consumers drove overall shipments in the third quarter and recorded a 33.5 percent growth from 2008. IDC also predicted that mini-notebooks or netbooks are expected to continue to grow at a slower rate than portable computers, since new ultra-thin portables are likely to be introduced by PC makers at an affordable price. Ultrathin laptops are also lightweight laptops but gives out a decent performance to run multimedia applications and gaming.
