World’s supreme Jaguar Supercomputer is powered by AMD’s Six-Core Opteron processors

Did you ever think about the processors used in the Super Computers which is at its best in speed of calculation, employed for specialized applications that process immense amounts of mathematical calculations used in various applications like animated graphics, fluid dynamic calculations, nuclear energy research, and petroleum exploration? And, the credit goes to AMD which leads the top five super computers in the world with a capability to perform tons of calculations to process the tasks.

Now, the Oak Ridge National Laboratory Jaguar supercomputer has been updated with a new six-core AMD Opteron processor which was earlier run on quad-core AMD Opteron power is claimed to be the World’s supreme supercomputer according to the Top 500. It is capable of 2.3 petaflop/s theoretical peak performance and 1.75 petaflop/s performance on the Linpack benchmark. The former top supercomputer Roadrunner which also uses AMD processors is now slipped down to second place.

Since last July, the Jaguar’s number of compute cores has dramatically increased from 129600 to 224162 and – it has been equipped with AMD’s new six-core processors ‘Istanbul’ and 2GB of memory per core. Each compute node features two Opterons with 12 cores and 16GB of shared memory, According to Top 500. The whole system has 300TB of memory and 10PB of hard disc space.

Though it’s the AMD which powers the world’s highest-performance super computer than any one else, but its competitor Intel Corp. is no way less as it powers more super computers listed in the Top 500. AMD is in a move to launch a new processor called Bulldozer with 16-cores in 2011. Kudos to AMD for its great job to get things done in a great fashion.
