14aug09 brainportreturns BrainPort makes blind see with their tongues

BrainPort, a technology developed by Wicab offers blind a chance to see with the tongue. This device is capable of decoding signals from head-mounted camera  serves as “eyes” to gather white, gray and black pixels of visual information. A computer translates this information to gentle electrical impulses, which it then sends to an array of electrodes that sits atop on the tongue of the user. With these impulses the user can experience spatial awareness and even read large text by the way of sensory information sent to one’s brain via a signal from the Brainport.

Though it’s an happy moment for the blind to overjoy that they can see with their tongue, the price of the device is out of reach at $10,000 is awaiting for the approval from FDA to release the product in the early 2010. Let’s hope that the price of the device is revised by the time of its release and made available to them at a reasonable price .
