Microsoft Office gets Online Applications with Office 14
Today at Professional Developers Conference, Microsoft’s Ray Ozzie announced that Microsoft will be launching online web applications with their new Microsoft Office, Office 14. In their previous Office packages they did not have such web applications. But with the announcement of Windows 7 they thought it is necessary for them to include web products to stay competitive with Google docs and Zoho which have created a great impact in online document viewing.
The Office applications which are going to have web enabled features are Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint and One Note. Apart from viewing these applications will have online editing capability as well. These applications have more network enabled features as two or more people can edit the same document simultaneously. Moreover the document can be edited by a person on web interface and a person on desktop at the same time.
The online names of these web applications will remain same i.e Word, Excel, Powerpoint and One Note. The collective name of these applications are called as Offive Web Applications. Microsoft also said that these applications use HTML and AJAX along with Silverlight components.
The Office Web Applications will be delivered through Microsoft Office Live and are compatible with Internet Explorer, Firefox and Safari.
Office 14 will implement the ISO compliant version of Open XML which was standardized as ISO 29500 in March 2008.
